The Warrior Challenge

10/18/08

Platte River State Park, Nebraska

Cool temps and fog greeted racers the morning of the Warrior Challenge Adventure Race.  Despite the gray skies, everyone was excited for the final Nebraska Sports Council Adventure Race of the year.

For this race, there was no night before check in, so we didn’t get our maps until just before the race.  This made things a little more interesting since teams didn’t have as long to plot their Check Points (CP’s).  And to challenge racers even more, we only received the first few coordinates which had to be completed before you could receive the next part and move on.

Cozad 100th Meridian Challenge

10/4/08

After a couple of races with relatively little orienteering, Jim Craig assured us that the final two races of the season would be much different.  He was right on!  Robert Dyer, the race director, and his group of volunteers in Cozad, NE put together a spectacular course for an Adventure Race.  Orienteering skills were essential for the 100th Meridian Challenge which combined equal amounts of running/trekking, mountain biking, and canoeing over a very tough and challenging course around Camp Comeca and Midway Lake.

Saturday morning when we woke up it was chilly and breezy, but otherwise great out for the Big Hawk Chief Adventure Race.  The Archway Monument in Kearney was a fitting setting for the start of this race.

Cornhusker State Games

Branched Oak Lake

This year’s CSG Adventure Race proved to be much different from the one we raced in a couple years ago.  After racing the long course in Chadron, Fairbury, and Ord, we felt pretty well prepared for this event this year.

The weather was great; decent temps and minimal wind (for July in Nebraska anyways).  Jim gave us last minute instructions at the prerace meeting.  There were 3 transition areas (TA’s) and multiple check points (CP’s) we had to ‘visit’.  The rules allowed us to go in any order, as long as we followed the instructions concerning checking in and out of the TA’s.
