Why did I get into Adventure Racing and the such? Well, it all started back a few years ago when I was going to work… and got out of breath just walking up to my second floor office. I realized that all the eating out and drinking was turning me into a giant fat blob!
So, I decided it was time to make a change. I started losing weight… 100 pounds in fact! And after all the burdening weight was gone… I felt I could do more. More than I had ever even thought of doing before. So, I signed up to compete in the Cornhusker State Games Triathlon. Not to try and win… just to try and finish. And I did! And I have been hooked ever since.
A lot of people ask me why I do this… and my answer is simply “Because I can!”
I used to barely be able to climb a few flights of stairs. Now, I am competing in running and biking races, triathlons, and adventure races… because I can. Just like when I was losing the weight… it is addictive. And the rush you get from finishing a race that you have never done before, or finishing a race better than you did the year before… it’s amazing.
Beyond that, I want to be a good role model. I want to be around longer for my children, and I want to be a good example for them. I strongly believe that if your children see you eating healthy and being active… they will do the same.
I like to encourage others to live a healthier lifestyle and get out and do more. Because I know what kinds of benefits come from it… not only health benefits, but the enjoyment factor.
Why? Because I can!!
